The Return of Fredrich (color inks on paper)

This painting is based on a quick black/white sketch I did. I liked the creature and decided to do a full color illustration with him as the main subject. It didn’t turn out very well, first because I used colored inks, which I find difficult to control, and basically because the composition wasn’t strong enough. In addition my drawing skills were even worse than they are today, although I still like the creature and his enigmatic smile.
I don’t usually do paintings from sketches like this and almost never do the same picture twice. If it doesn’t work out the first time, it’s time to move on. Of course I often do rough sketches and studies before starting out on large projects, however they are often very basic and the finished painting may turn out completely different than the preliminary drawings.

There is a feeling about this piece that feels very welcoming to me. Makes me want to step in and meet your creature friend.
